Inversions are considered to be fundamental in any serious Hatha Yoga practice. Headstand (sirsasana) and shoulderstand (sarvangasana) are respectively called the King and Mother of the Asanas. Some of their benefits include reversing the effects of gravity on the fluids in the body, improving circulation, and tonifying the digestive and eliminative systems. The list goes on and on. Yet many of us strugglewith these difficult poses.

In this three part workshop series, you will practice handstand, elbow balance, headstand and shoulderstand. You will learn how toprepare for the inverted postures, develop balance andlongevity while upside down, and practice headstand and shoulderstandvariations. There is a month between each session so you can practicewhat you learned at home and be ready to move on safely to the next level.

About the 3 Sessions:

Part 1- PREPARING FOR INVERSIONS Saturday, September 13, 2003, 1:30-4:00pm. Through a thorough exploration of preparatory asanas, we will strengthen and open specific areas of the body to support the inversions. We will demystify what actions are necessary to experience a nourishing inverted practice. We will learn safe ways to practice the rejuvenating postures of headstand and shoulderstand. This workshop is perfect for advanced beginning and intermediate students.

Part 2- THE BALANCE Saturday, October 4, 2003, 1:30-4:00pm. 3 minutes is the minimal time necessary to remain inverted in order to receive the benefits of the posture. In this workshop we wil refine the actions learned in Level I to create stable, balanced inversions that can be safely held for at least 3 minutes.

Part 3- Inversion Variations Saturday, November 22, 2003, 1:30-4:00pm. Some of the most exquisite asanas are elbow balance, headstand and shoulderstand variations. Learn how to get a full practice of backbends and twists while being upside down!!
